THE NEW KHLONG SAN PLAZA
Khlong san
Bangkok, Thailand
Total Area: 11,500 sqm

DESCRIPTION
development project represents a unique approach to sustainable design and development, with its focus on promoting sustainable practices and supporting local economic development. The project's location at the abandoned site of Khlong San Plaza, close to the Khlong San Pier in Bangkok, Thailand, provides an excellent opportunity to revitalize an underutilized space, create a new landmark, and promote sustainable development.
PROJECT BACKGROUND & DISCOVERY
The historic market, located conveniently near Si Phraya Pier, presents a prime opportunity to revitalize the community and boost the local economy. With existing transportation links for boats, cars, and trains, the market is easily accessible to both locals and tourists. However, the current atmosphere is unwelcoming, dark, and unsecure, deterring potential visitors.

By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the market's strengths, a vibrant community hub can be created. Integrating green spaces throughout the design, including expanding the three existing parks, would enhance the environment and promote biodiversity . This would also create a more welcoming atmosphere for visitors and locals alike.

Leveraging the market's strategic location, a gallery community for art and creative could be established, attracting a diverse crowd and fostering cultural exchange. Additionally, a health club would cater to the needs of the nearby health community, further enhancing the area's appeal.

By implementing these improvements, the market can transform into a thriving destination, benefiting the local community economically and environmentally while creating a more welcoming and vibrant atmosphere for everyone.

PROGRAM ANALYSIS

The redevelopment of Khlong San Plaza aims to stimulate local economic growth, promote sustainability, and enhance the quality of life for the community. The new design, featuring eco-friendly practices and modular architecture, will create an attractive commercial space that supports local businesses and attracts visitors. Additionally, the project prioritizes sustainability to minimize environmental impact and foster a resilient community. The revitalized plaza will serve as a vibrant gathering space, improving the overall well-being of the community and establishing a new landmark. This initiative presents a unique opportunity to transform an underutilized area into a thriving, sustainable hub.

INTEGRATION

The proposed walkway design aims to connect the city to Klong San pier while incorporating biophilic principles, emphasizing the connection between humans and nature. Green spaces will be integrated along the walkway, creating a diverse and biodiverse environment.
This will enhance the area's aesthetic, provide tranquility, and educate users about nature's importance.Sustainable features like natural ventilation, daylighting, and rainwater harvesting will be included to reduce environmental impact. Green roofs and walls will further contribute to sustainability and biodiversity by reducing stormwater runoff, improving air quality, and providing shade.
IMPACT

The redevelopment of Klong San's old plaza aims to transform it into a modern marketplace with a new selling area, green spaces, and a boat pier. The use of modular architecture offers faster construction, reduced environmental impact, and easier future expansion. This approach aligns with the goal of making the site a new landmark in Bangkok while benefiting the local community and economy.
INNOVATION

Our construction project prioritizes sustainability by repurposing site waste materials and incorporating local resources. We will reuse demolished metal and concrete blocks, and utilize the traditional "Bai Chak" technique of weaving leaves into a thatched roof.
This roof will be combined with a structure made of repurposed light steel, creating a unique blend of modern and traditional design. Additionally, we will incorporate natural ventilation and temperature regulation by including an air gap within the interior wall, maximizing natural light and reducing energy consumption. This approach not only promotes environmental sustainability but also honors the local culture and traditions.
